The Power of Good in the Human Spirit by Fred A. Manske Jr.
Isn’t it just amazing; the worst of times often brings out the best in the human spirit?
Just when it seems that things couldn’t be worse economically along comes the story of the “Same Café” (meaning: ‘So All May Eat’) in Denver, Colorado that was featured last week on the NBC Evening News and again two nights ago on the same show. In case you missed the story: The ‘Same Café’ is unique in that it does not have a set menu as well as set prices. Daily selections are made using fresh, organic ingredients, and funded by the donations of patrons. Instead of a cash register, a donation box is available for customers to pay what they feel their meal is worth, or to leave a little more to help out someone less fortunate. If a diner does not have sufficient money to pay, he or she is encouraged to cover the cost by working an hour waiting on tables, preparing food, cleaning up, etc. The café’s philosophy: “everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the opportunity to eat healthy food while being treated with dignity.”
According to NBC News, “All over America, people like Brad and Libby Birky, the owners of the “Same Café,” are rising to the occasion to help others in need; especially during these difficult times where millions have lost their jobs and countless others are working for less.
GOOD DEEDS ARE CONTAGIOUS! Just ask Brian Williams and the staff at NBC. In recent days they have received thousands of e-mails describing other people with “helping hands and big hearts.” So during this time of great need in our nation I urge you to be “the spark of hope” in your community by being creative and generous in helping those in need.
I leave you with the words of Danny Thomas, the famous actor who founded St Jude Children’s Cancer Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It’s what you do for others.
