The question, “What’s new in the field of leadership” is frequently asked to leadership experts James Kouzes and Barry Posner. At first glance their answer of “not much” seems to be disappointing - disappointing” in that everyone likes to hear the newest, greatest leadership trend or fad. In fact, “not much” is a good news-answer for leaders because while the context of leadership may change with organizations, cultures and times, the content of great leadership is fairly constant. This brings stability to the basics so that leaders can focus on improving them over time instead of trying to adopt every new fad that comes around.
The goal for their new book The Truth About Leadership, say Kouzes and Posner, is to focus on what endures and is timeless about leadership. The April edition of our FREE Leadership Guide Magazine features an article entitled “The Truth About Leadership” — an excerpt and review of the book with the same title. The article highlights ten leadership fundamentals. In a related story, we present an interview with one of the authors of the book; Barry Posner entitled “The Art of Getting Others to Want to Struggle for Shared Aspirations.”
We think you will find the articles both interesting and helpful in your own leadership development efforts.
