March 2010 Issue

This month we continue to feature practical articles related to the leader’s role in ensuring high ethical standards in his or her organization. The first article is entitled “Red Flags to Corporate Ethical Scandals.” In it Ramalinga Raju, CEO of the large Indian outsourcing company Satyam, discusses how his company was impacted by a scandal involving unethical accounting practices. He says, “Ethical lapses begin innocuously by small discrepancies that slowly grow beyond control over the years … finally becoming like “riding a tiger, not knowing how to get off without being eaten alive.” Warning signs to impending ethical doom are detailed, along with practical insights into how the Enrons of the corporate world can occur.

In Part II, “ Preventing Ethical Disasters at Your Organization,” we identify specific, practical tips to stay out of the ethical hall of shame. “Ethical leadership is not reserved only for those at the top; rather, it is a quality held by individuals and organizations with the moral courage and diligence to talk and walk ethical values. That is what is meant by individual and institutional integrity.”

The third article by our editor Linda Hatcher presents a number of practical tips for developing teams with honesty and integrity. It is entitled, “High Performance and Ethical Teams.”
